28/04/12

Still adjusting to life on the road by myself again today.
It rained all night and was still pretty ordinary when I decided to get up.
The place that I parked for the night was pretty much opposite the pub and near a park where the toilet and cooking facilities were pretty swanky.

Freda at 1770
When there was a break in the weather I decided to take a few pics.

The place where ye olde Cap'n Cook landed at 1770

It was another day of driving today.
I stopped at Rockhampton and caught up with John who I think is being offered a job at the local newspaper.

The welcoming sign says.....EAT BEEF!

Rockhampton seems like a pretty nice sorta place. John and I had a quick beer then it was time to hit the road again.
I checked my Camps 6 book and my target was Carmilla which I made after dark. It was bloody frustrating trying to find the spot in the dark and I have now made a vow to not try and find a camp spot for the night after sunset - it's a complete pain in the arse not knowing where you're going or where exactly you're parking.

I woke up today in a pretty dark mood. I think it was just a shock to the system of being back on the road again by myself after spending a week and a half in familiar surroundings with friends in Brisbane.
The weather this morning was perfect so I did some yoga which helped me get out of my funk.

Yoga man, Yoga man, does whatever a yogi can...

John was generous enough to loan me his really good camera that he no longer uses so I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of results I can get with it.
My first stop today was in Hervey Bay. I didn't stay too long, just went to the pier and had a bit of a look around, the beaches were pretty crap and the town didn't seem all that interesting so I decided to keep moving on.

Stop "piering" at me (haha)

Jumping the shark
I soon began to drive through sugar cane country which is VERY north Qld.

View from the road, view from the road, if I keep doing this I'll be squashed like a toad

I drove through Bundaberg which seems like a pretty old timey sort of town with memorials everywhere. I didn't stop in Bundy but kept going through to a little place called Bargara and had some lunch but the weather was closing in so it wasn't all that pleasant.
I went up to the lookout and took some pics. The brown soil was a stunning contrast to the lush green vegetation.

Greens and browns...
I also had to get a pic of myself with the sugar cane:

Sugar cane! YEAH!

It was then on to a place called 1770 which i decided to go to simply because of its cool name.
The weather was very ordinary by the time I arrived so I went to the pub and got talking to Terry from Brisbane who was celebrating his 51st birthday with a few beers.

Today it was time to leave Brisbane.
It was good catching up with some good friends and having a few laughs.
There was nothing much that was too exciting today. I just headed up the highway after lunch and after I passed Caloundra, I was officially the furthest north that I had ever been in Australia.
I ended up stopping for the night at a nice little spot called Petrie Park which is just south of Maryborough.
The "Camps 6" book that I got for xmas has certainly been of great use since I've been on the road - there is no way I would have known about, let alone found this spot as there were no signs off the highway.
There were quite a few nomads there but the spot closest to the river was free so I popped Freda in there and went about having some din dins.

Freda by tha riverside mother...

Dude eating an apple by the river
The sun is setting realy early and quickly now which is a bit of a bummer but hey, what can you do?

The sunset looked better in real life...seriously
